Topic: If you could "right" the "wrongs"... Posted: 22 Mar 2008 at 17:46 |
If you could "right" the "wrongs" in the film trilogy, what would you do differently? I am a fan of the movies as they are what got me into reading Tolkien's works in the first place, but after having read the books and seeing the differences, there are some things I wish PJ would have done differently.
My number one objection would be the portrayal of Faramir. While I love D. Wenham, who I think played the role very well, I fault the scriptwriters for trying to "up the ante" so to speak by making Faramir toy with the idea of actually taking the ring for himself (which, in the books never happens and is farthest from the truth). I think that it cheapened his character, and it would've been nice to see the contrast that existed between the two brothers.
What do you think?

I would have liked that change to Faramir also, seeing as in the books hes one of my favourite characters. I think by resisting the ring in the books he becomes more "noble" so to speak. I would have also liked to have seen Glorfindel, but I understand (mostly) why Arwen was used instead...

Yeah I am with you on that one too Gilfindel (you'll still always be Anor to me though ). The whole Arwen replacing Glorfindel was a horrible editing job done on the parts of PJ and Co., but I can understand the reasons why they did what they did. Still don't agree with it, but hey that's Hollywood screenwriting strategy at work for ya. At least they were smart enough to delete Arwen's scenes from TTT-- Arwen at Helm's Deep...

I at first agreed that Faramir's character was done poorly, but after watching some of the extra features I understand why they did it and totally agree. For us who have read the books and understand it, the character feels wrong. To someone who has never heard of LOTR, this would undermine the character of the ring which they had been trying so hard to build up. If the ring was so easily repelled by a mere man how could it be as powerful and destructive as everyone had been saying up to that point.
I really would have like to see Glorfindel too, but for a film to introduce a character, explain why they are there, give the importance and then totally drop them is extreamly confusing for an audience. It would be awesome to see him in that, but once again we have to think of the people who haven't read the books.
The one thing that I wish had been different would be the giving of the everstar to Aragorn. Even though it works for the film well, for some reason it really meant a lot to me when I read the book that Arwen gave it to Frodo. So even though it might be a little less meaningful to a lot of the audience, on a personal level I would have liked to have seen that.

Elves at Helms Deep; but hey... Elves mean big money right... and rings of power too if you ask the right ones... Over simplification of the Dark powers and their minions (and their general relationship to the world...) ...and the last movie sucked pretty much all the way through The amount of nuclear and carsonogenic waste produced in the making of these terrible and beautiful films... ...then
again if you see a successful film as grossing lots of money for people who realy
don't need it... then it was a huge blundering puss filled bucket of
success... and it only managed to insult half the known universe in some
way or another... so I think they were really good The
scene where they were all sat on a bed laughing and frolicking and
giggling at each other (...you know, after the big climax, when all sense
of proportion and ideas of budget sanity were lost; and most sane
people had left the theatre...). I would have extend that scene, and
got rid of all that rubbish about the ring and the land of Mordor; and
skirted over all the aftermath and loss and destruction and freed
slaves... and turned the brightness up a notch too, as it would seem
silly to have a Dark Mordor/ Pelennor field (lets face it Helms Deep
would have been far scarier... if it wasn't for all the Elves romping
the battlements!) And I thought El Woodio was great as Frodo... he didn't sound anything like a simpering cultist actor zombie... The
endless extras were also amazing... Mortenson broke his foot... and he
was scratching his ass when he fluffed that line about Gandalf always
talking in riddles... All in all, a great success.

Are you kidding? Arwen replacing me was positively CRIMINAL! I should sue really. And you should have seen the state Asfaloth was in when she put him back in his stall - the girl is obviously a stranger to grooming... and that's just the horse! *tosses own lovely locks carelessly*
OK so they needed to justify Liv Tyler's 'well-deserved' fee (never has so much been done to promote collagen injection as a means of looking so... pouty) and to really showcase her tremendous acting ability (look pretty crying - add glycerin; look pretty getting a teensy scratch on her face - bit of theatrical paint; look pretty in a nice silver bridal headdress - ooh! jewellery shopping!; oh and of course there was that hugely important scene where she had to look pretty dropping to the floor 'ill' - Elves don't get ill for that reason, but granted in her case and at that stage, she really ought to have considered dying of shame - all with roughly the same expression - wonderful stuff).
On the subject of characters dropping in and out of the screenplay - who cares! They could have had anyone - hell they could even have done it like it said in the book and it wouldn't have taxed most people's grip on the fairly simple plot of ' An Elf who knows Aragorn turns up looking for him and 4 hobbits, one slightly sick, make an informed diagnosis of the sick one - hey he needs Elrond for this - and then rocket off with said sick hobbit on a fast horse' - which actually he didn't did he - he hoisted Frodo up there on his own and stayed behind to fight the 9 wraiths with the others didn't he - because he had the shiny Calaquendi wattage to fight them unlike some pretty peredhel princess who could sew a bit?
It certainly didn't need to be a character who actually appears a little later on - twice is it? 3 times at the very most - and doesn't even speak in the book.
OK so the books rubbish for female parts, but it has 2 cracking ones apart from Arwen which they did very well. With the addition of using material from the appendices and some dialogue consonant with that (and yeah OK keep the kissy scene on the Bridge in Immy too 'cos that looks nice and Aragorn deserved a little fun) then they had plenty to keep Ms Tyler challenged and getting sufficient wardobe changes...
Shall I do Faramir now - ? Well poor lad, he didn't have much of a part either and they cut all his 'romantic' scenes with Eowyn in the HoH, so I suppose they thought let's just have him do the angst thing with the One in Osgiliath, rather than Henneth Annun - conveniently forgetting that even with horseys they're adding a couple of days at least to Frodo's journey and he'll be late for chucking the Ring - and no one would notice... But hey! Never mind that it took the young captain about 2 hours tops over by the waterfall to decide that this Ring was too hot to handle and needed dumping - no drama there really is there? And then they could've let him have a quick squeeze of Eowyn back in MT, except.... they sent him to the Morannon did they? I forget 'cos I fell asleep during the Battle of the Pellennor which was 2 days longer surely than Tolkien wrote it? Ah! Of course! That was how they had time to take Frodo on a quick detour to Osgiliath! Very clever! Or am I getting confused again?

I think its pretty safe to say that there are many wrongs in the movie that could have been made right. And I thought this list would have been much longer by now actually, lol.
After reading the book I find it very hard to go back to watching the movies. I guess because it all seems so wrong now and I can't get by the changes made. It really seems like a different story in some ways. I wonder sometimes though, instead of diverting from the book why can't they just leave out certain bits if they can't do it properly?
Anyway, with some of the changes, I agree that exchanging Glorfindel for Arwen was an injustice but not near as bad as changing Faramir's whole personality! "If the ring was so easily repelled by a mere man how could it be as
powerful and destructive as everyone had been saying up to that point."~ Nex Es Pacis
I agree, the movie shows Faramir in a very poor light indeed. We see him resisting the Ring, but ONLY when pulled out of his trance by Sam who shouted at him to leave Frodo alone. Whereas in the book Faramir was quite aware of Isildur's Bane and especially after hearing what the Ring did to his brother he did not even want to SEE it. Two great (and powerful) men struck down by some powerful thing he (Faramir) did not know what exactly but understood it was an evil and corrupt thing of power. No, of course Faramir was not immune to the Ring's power and he KNEW it, thus he did not even want to see it.
"What in truth this Thing is I cannot yet guess; but some heirloom of power and peril it must be. A fell weapon, perchance, devised by the Dark Lord. If it were a thing that gave advantage in battle, I can well believe that Boromir, the proud and fearless, often rash, ever anxious for the victory of Minas Tirith (and his own glory therein), might desire such a thing and be allured by it. Alas that ever he went on that errand! I should have been chosen by my father and the elders, but he put himself forward, as being the older and the hardier (both true), and he would not be stayed.
"But fear no more! I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo." The Window on the West, TTT
The movie, therefore made Faramir appear very weak and less then who he really was and that in my opinion is unforgivable. It is one thing to replace a character but it is a totally different aspect to change a characters whole being. His values, his beliefs and his morals. This to me is a far greater injustice to one of Tolkiens best written characters. Personally I feel that if the writers of the movie felt that Faramir and Frodo needed to go on some "personal journey" I'd say forget that! better to give Elijiah and Wenham less coverage in TTT and spend more time filming something people want to see, like the battle of Isenguard, or Helm's Deep rather than changing their characters.

Don't forget missing out on snogging Eowyn in the HoH too Miah - boy did those two people ever need a good cuddle what with mad ingrate fathers, possessed, irresponsible uncles and wayward brothers!

erm, yeah the snogging (you Brits have strange words! lol) I do recall the great build up to seeing the EE version of RoTK and all the wonder of what new bits there might be between Faramir and Eowyn in the HoH and lo and behold what do we get? Hands! they hold hands! Oh wow! Well slap me silly and tie a steak around my neck and put me out with the hounds why don'tcha?! yeah I was hoping to see more dialogue between the two as in the book but of course that was not in the cards... *sighs*
What else? Oh yeah! what about the Legolas skateboarding down the stairs bit? how come no one has mentioned that? or the tasteless jokes between Legolas and Gimli? that drinking scene was incorrigible! I didn't find it amusing at all, poor Gimli... making fun of the dwarves and they are suppose to be so noble and tough. Short and hairy jokes...
Did anyone notice Haldir's five o'clock shadow? don't get me wrong, because I think Craig Parker is handsome but...get a better shaver and put on some makeup why don't you?! Geesh! Elves aren't suppose to have facial hair are they? well not a blonde Look at Glorfy there..*points* he's got cheeks that could rival a baby's butt for pity's sake!
...ah man I could write a book! lol.

First for me would have to be Arwen replacing Glorfindel. I honestly cannot understand the logic of this. If they'd kept Glorfindel, he wouldn't have just disappeared immediately, as he is present at the Council of Elrond, so even if he had no dialogue in his second appearance it would have been more than obvious he was a member of Elrond's household and an important one at that to be included. Instead we're given a pointless appearance of Arwen, who is apparently considered strong enough to face down all the Nazgul, but not to be present when difficult decisions are made. Possibly it was after her bedtime, who knows. That for me was actually more confusing than if they'd just stuck to the text.
As for Faramir ... *sobs into hanky* Yikes, the only relation he bore to the Faramir of the books was they shared the same name, though we should probably be thankful they didn't change him to an Easterling adopted into the Stewards family with a crippling pipeweed addiction just to give him more of a "journey". Seriously though, I think it is so sad that they think an audience can't manage to cope with the shocking idea of a noble and honest character. The lack of interaction between Faramir and Eoyn really irked me, especially after they'd put in so many unnecessary scenes between Arwen and Aragorn.
The snot green slime in RotK was hilarious though. Having spent so much time on the battle of the Pelennor, which seemed to last forever, (or possibly I was just really bored by then) to have it end so abruptly with just a tide of slime was too weird. Possibly it should have been 'Return of the Slime' rather than 'Return of the King' since Aragorn seemed to have little to do with the victory.
I have to agree with Miah, the whole let's make fun of the dwarves thing got so old so quickly. In the books the interaction between Legolas and Gimli was so well done, in the way they gradually managed to forge a friendship based on respect. Whereas in the movie it looked like it was merely based on Legolas' ability to hold his drink.
As for Leggy, gah! I don't ever want to see that on the screen again. I swear if they include skateboarding Legolas in the Hobbit film, I am boycotting the movies for good *g*

I am one of the rare few that prefer the films to the books. I am not going to go into them, as that sentence alone is probably contentious enough. Suffice it to say I agreed with making Arwen the one to take Frodo to Elrond. Tolkien didn't really write many female characters. The ones that did have speaking parts were either stern, bossy hobbit women or... simpering young hobbit women!
All Arwen does in the book is sit pretty and silent in her fathers house then turns up at the end of the trilogy and marries the hero... personally I think Arwen should have been the one to kill the Witch King... (it would have fitted the prophecy for she was no man on many levels!) and would have made her worthy of Aragorn.
The thing I would have changed from the movies is, yes the portrayal of Faramir. In the books he is quiet, thoughtful, wise and fair. In the film they made him just like Boromir, in all but one way.
I would also have changed the Ents. In the book they practically crashed through Fangorn Forest trumpeting, charging and ' being hasty' in Treebeards words. In the film they decided they wouldn't get involved. And made Pippin trick Treebeard into seeing Saruman's destruction. That made me more angry when I came out of the cinema.
But what really steams me even now is the total eradication of Saruman's voice from the film. To me that is an integral part of the plot, and they scrubbed it out! I know it was put in the Director's Cut version but it still doesn't compensate... if you think about that was Saruman's big moment!
Personally. I loved the Elves at Helm's Deep. The final stand between Elves and men, and I think the Legolas skateboarding down the stairs was cool. It made the scene more active, dynamic, and a wonderfully efficient way to kill as many enemies as possible.

I was too young to be interested in the books when suddenly the movies
came out--- I ended up getting addicted to the movies and read all the
books from the Hobbit to RotK in the summer before the 3 movie (which I
saw on the day of its release). But now I myself do not really like the
movies at all, though I must admit their significance to the film
industry in general. I myself agree with Tolkien-- it's impossible to
make LotR into a film, that is impossible to make it REALLY, TRULY into
a film.
The movies were condensed, child versions for the sake of
entertainment-- but I admit that they WERE VERY VERY VERY entertaining.

The settings were fabulous! I mean, what better place is there to film the LoTR but in New Zealand? I would love to go on the tour some day. Anyone up for that?

*hand shoots up*
I loathe flying long haul (and I've done a lot in the past believe me) but NZ is about the only, or at the top of a very short list, of places that I'd want to visit.
I think I said in another thread around here that it was the locations more than anything else that truly moved me watching FotR for the first viewing and even now still does. The cinematography was also a big factor in creating the geographical 'magic', but the locations have to be good to start with of course and in fact it was the more 'banal' or less specialised locations in the Shire and the Emyn Muil that I was most affected by.
I think that's probably also a factor in why I really, really can't forgive PJ for allowing Newline (or whoever the hell it was) to talk him into chopping the Scouring out of the finale - it would have so brilliant to see Sam, Pippin and Merry having their moment of true glory after the main adventure when they drive out Saruman from the one place they had hoped would stay untouched from Mordor's/Isengard's threat. They obviously intended for it to be one of the action climaxes for the film else they wouldn't have shown the scenes of prediction in the Mirror sequence (where Sam in the book/Frodo in the movies ) sees the Mill set on fire. So it was certainly scheduled for shooting in more depth - no wonder Christopher Lee got so p*ssed at them! Very, very sad that such an incredible opportunity was missed to add a much more credible, artistic and indeed intelligent ending and actually credit the audience with a little bit of taste and resilience. It's almost criminal to have glossed the true and grittier conclusion that made the Hobbits' part in the War so much more meaningful and poignant and of course would have made such great, memorable visuals - I sincerely hope Del Toro has a little more backbone if they try and talk him out of killing Fili & Kili or something equally ludicrous...
